International Rice Research Conference presents strategies and trends for sustainable rice agriculture
The International Rice Research Conference (IRRC) will bring together scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders from both the public and private sectors across the world to tackle critical global challenges and discuss solutions to accelerate urgently needed transformations in the rice sector. The IRRC's inclusive platform bolsters knowledge-sharing, dynamic exchanges of ideas, and the forging of essential partnerships, towards a more sustainable and food and nutrition-secure future.
The IRRC is one of the main activities of the 6th International Rice Conference (IRC2023). This year’s IRC, with the theme Accelerating Transformation of Rice-Based Food Systems: From Gene to Globe. will be held from 16 to 19 October at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila, Philippines.
The IRRC will delve into the following themes that are shaping and revolutionizing the rice sector:
Fast-Tracking Genetic Solutions and Varieties Experts will discuss the use of genome sequencing, gene editing, and speed breeding in developing novel climate-resilient rice varieties with important traits such as tolerance to extreme environmental stresses.
One Health and Nutritious Rice Value Chains Grain quality takes the spotlight under this theme. A paradigm shift in crop breeding prioritizes nutritional and textural properties earlier in the process of developing rice varieties with essential micronutrients and market-driven traits. Researchers will present updates on enhancing nutritional and value-added grain traits in rice, ensuring healthier food options for consumers.
Digital Solutions Across Scales The theme highlights the digital revolution's role in reshaping agriculture. Experts will present technologies for empowering farmers, including remote sensing, digital tools, data analytics, and machine learning to optimize resource utilization and boost agricultural yields for higher efficiency and returns for farmers.
Nature-Based Farming Solutions The theme addresses the ecological balance often overlooked in traditional resource-intensive farming practices. By exploring research updates on improved management practices, this theme will promote sustainable agriculture and biodiversity preservation.
Transforming Rice Landscapes for Climate Resilience The theme addresses agriculture's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and ways to significantly reduce GHG emissions. Researchers will explore various approaches, including water and soil management, and direct-seeded rice.
Partnerships and scaling impact In this theme, researchers will delve into the importance of investments in agricultural research and the role of government policies and market drivers. Collaborations between different sectors will be emphasized to facilitate the dissemination and deployment of novel research products.
Sustainable Global Rice Economy The transformative impact of investments in agricultural research on reducing hunger and long-term poverty will be explored under this theme. It highlights how access to sufficient and nutritious food is essential for a society's resilience in the face of global crises.
Societal Equity, Equality, and Prosperity Presentations under this theme will tackle the empowerment of women and youth in rice value chains and how research products can contribute to achieving equity, equality, and prosperity in agriculture.
IRC, held every four years, is widely recognized as the leading international event for the rice sector. It brings together the world’s leading experts, thought leaders and scientists to discuss emerging challenges and cutting-edge solutions for rice-based food systems. This year’s IRC is jointly organized by the International Rice Research Institute and the Philippine Department of Agriculture.
