Propelling Transformative Change in Asia: IRC 2023 as a Platform for Engagement and Innovation
by Dr. Jongsoo Shin, Regional Director of IRRI-Asia

In Asia, rice is not just a food crop; it is a source of daily energy, an indispensable part of the culture, and a way of life for billions of people. Across South Asian countries to the ASEAN region and the East Asian nations, the rice sector plays a key role in not just food production, but also in economic development and national security.

However, the rice sector in Asia is at a crossroads, facing a mounting array of challenges such as surging demand, the disruptive impacts of climate change, and heightened competition for resources. In this evolving landscape, sticking to traditional methods and maintaining the status quo is no longer a viable option. The imperative lies in accelerating the transformation of rice-based systems to make them more productive, resilient, and sustainable, ensuring a food-secure future.

The International Rice Congress (IRC) emerges as the ideal platform to ignite and propel this transformative change. As the largest global gathering of rice stakeholders, IRC brings together a diverse selection of individuals and organizations spanning the entire rice value chain. It unites stakeholders from upstream to downstream, encompassing both the public and private sectors. At the upcoming IRC 2023, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on the innovative solutions that are set to drive the transformation of the rice sector in Asia.

From my perspective, these topics and areas of innovation are poised to play pivotal roles at IRC 2023:

Genetic research: One of the focal points at IRC 2023 will undoubtedly be the exploration of advancements in genetic research and biotechnology. These breakthroughs hold the key to unlocking the latent potential of rice crops, enhancing their productivity, nutritional content, and resilience in the face of diverse environmental challenges.

Breeding: IRC will serve as a crucial forum for discussions on breeding, with experts delving into the development of novel rice varieties endowed with improved traits. These traits could range from disease resistance and drought tolerance to enhanced nutritional profiles, all of which are pivotal in addressing the evolving requirements of the food system.

Sustainable farming: IRC 2023 promises to be a platform for learning about innovative and sustainable farming practices. These practices optimize resource utilization, reduce environmental impact, and promote the long-term sustainability of rice production systems.

Digital agriculture: The congress will emphasize the significance of digital agriculture, shedding light on harnessing precision technologies and data-driven solutions. These technologies are instrumental in optimizing rice farming operations, improving decision-making processes, and maximizing yields.

Value chain innovation: IRC 2023 will undoubtedly illuminate new systems and processes, spanning from production and processing to distribution and consumption. These innovations are set to enhance efficiency, minimize waste, and ensure food safety and quality throughout the rice value chain.

Climate resilience: Given the pressing issue of climate change, IRC will spotlight strategies and technologies aimed at mitigating its impact on rice production. The congress will underscore the need to adapt to evolving environmental conditions and build resilient food systems capable of withstanding future challenges.

Ecology and biodiversity: The event will also delve into the domain of ecology and biodiversity, emphasizing sustainability tools, technologies, and practices. These practices make rice farming more cost-effective while simultaneously reducing its environmental impact and safeguarding the fragile ecosystem.

Nutrition and health: IRC 2023 will put the spotlight on technologies and systems designed to address the challenges of malnutrition, protect consumer health, and promote diverse and balanced diets.

Social equity: The congress will also place a special emphasis on promoting social equity by supporting research, technologies, and systems that are inclusive and equitable. These initiatives will benefit women, youth, and marginalized communities, ultimately contributing to greater sustainability and food security.Market access and trade: IRC will delve into the realms of market access and trade, exploring how fair and inclusive policies can ensure sustainability, resilience, and equity. This inclusive approach aims to benefit all stakeholders involved in rice-based food systems.

Collaboration: Lastly, IRC 2023 will be a clarion call for collaboration, encouraging cooperation, knowledge sharing, and partnerships among diverse stakeholders. This collaborative spirit will serve as the driving force behind the regional and global transformation of rice-based food systems.

In conclusion, IRC 2023 is poised to be a signature moment in the journey towards transformative change in Asia's rice sector. By fostering engagement and innovation, it provides the impetus needed to address the sector's most pressing challenges while unlocking new opportunities. IRC can be a beacon guiding us toward a future where rice production is not only food-secure but also sustainable and prosperous for generations to come.
