The 6th International Rice Congress: a platform for insights and innovation
by Katharina Staske, Managing Director of DLG Asia Pacific
Having had the privilege to be closely associated with the International Rice Congress (IRC) and witness its evolution, I am both thrilled and humbled to share my thoughts and experiences towards the upcoming 6th International Rice Congress in Manila.
At DLG, the German Agricultural Society, one of our core mandates is to bridge the gap between theoretical solutions and practical applications. The IRC's theme of accelerating food systems transformation is a testament to that vision. The trade show, a significant component of the Congress, epitomizes this by presenting market-ready solutions - from novel farm input solutions, such as innovative seed varieties, to post-harvest technologies. It's not just about discussing issues; it's about offering tangible solutions rice farmers can apply today.
Being in the heart of the action, I've seen the diverse range of offerings this trade show brings to the table. With 41 esteemed exhibitors from 15 countries, including many notable companies like AGCO, Kubota, and Syngenta, the variety and depth of solutions presented are impressive. Moreover, esteemed organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and our very own DLG are set to offer valuable insights.
Addressing food security is a cornerstone of our mission. The challenges of rice storage in humid climates and the need for high-yielding and disease-resistant rice strains, especially for small-scale farmers, are substantial. At this Congress, these challenges aren't just topics of discussion. They receive answers from both scientists and the private sector.
A noteworthy mention would be the unique symbiosis the trade show facilitates. It's not just a platform to showcase technology but a melting pot of ideas. Academicians, the private sector, and farmers converge, making it a hub for mutual learning and exchange. This seamless collaboration ensures that sustainable solutions aren't just a vision but an achievable reality.
Looking back at our journey, since DLG's inception in 1885 by the visionary Max Eyth, our objective has always been to foster knowledge in agriculture across borders. The Trade Show at the 6th International Rice Congress is an embodiment of this mission, enabling technology and input providers to collaborate with practitioners and experts. Our collaboration with IRRI in Asia, notably through events like AGRITECHNICA ASIA, stands as a testament to our commitment to bring the private sector to the forefront of agricultural advancements.
In conclusion, as we approach the 6th International Rice Congress, I'm filled with anticipation and optimism. With the collective expertise and passion of all involved, I'm confident that this Congress will mark yet another milestone in our journey towards a sustainable and prosperous future for rice farming. Let's come together, learn, and pave the way forward.
